Why does a green ring form on the yellow of the hard-boiled egg? (And how to get rid of it?)

tastier.

What causes the green ring?

The green (sometimes grayish) ring around the egg yolk is the iron in yolk and the result of a natural chemical reaction in protein. When the egg is cooked for too long or needs to be exposed to high heat, these elements merge and form iron(II) sulfide – a compound that is responsible for the formation of a greenish ring.

Although the color may not be very appetizing, egg consumption is completely safe; it is simply less showing.

The real culprit: overcooking.
